Helge Lien – What are you doing the rest of your life

Che la Norvegia sia patria di molti talenti musicali europei negli ultimi 30 anni non e’ una novita’, continuo comunque a stupirmi quando incontro qualcosa, una scintilla vitale, quella vibrazione che mi risveglia e mi lascia addosso questa voglia di ascoltare e riascoltare magari un solo passaggio.
Sono inciampato per caso su questo disco scaricandolo da Emusic, mio fornitore ufficiale di talenti non ben distribuiti dalle case discografiche, il nome della meravigliosa composizione di Legrand ha fatto il resto.
Lo ammetto ho iniziato il viaggio dal fondo, non ho saputo resistere e sono partito dall’ultimo brano appunto la bellissima what are you doing the rest of your life. E’ bastata una nota per innamorarmi del tocco di questo trentaduenne talento del nord, il suono rotondo, un mordente netto sulla melodia, l’ingresso della cassa della batteria in controtempo rispetto al contrabbasso, un tema delicatamente accennato e raccontato anche da quelle spazzole e dai contrappunti del basso. Anche gli altri due musicisti mi sono completamente sconosciuti, e sono di una bravura e di una maturita’ rara.L’improvvisazione continua tra delicate sospensioni, giochi su pattern ritmici e quasi senza accorgersi si rientra nel tema con dispiacere, con il desiderio di scoprire ancora un’ angolino di meraviglia nell’interpretazione. Il lirismo di questo inizio e’ confermato andando a ritroso ascoltando il disco, una vera gioia scoprire talenti di questo calibro, con una discografia gia’ sostanziosa sulle spalle e con questa maturita’ artistica. Un bel trio, un bel suono, ancora una bella voce del pianoforte nord europeo.

Una strana personalita’ quella di Jim Pepper, strana commistione quella del suo essere pellerossa e sassofonista jazz. Realmente una rarita’ questa, che si riflette appunto nella sua musica, una realta’ quasi visionaria e mistica come solo la cultura dei nativi d’america sa essere. Le sue composizioni sono cosi’ legate alla terra, allo spirito, difficile spiegare questa cosa che si sente perfettamente, la spiritualita’ nordica cosi’ particolare di Garbarek sin dai primi anni 70 ha esplorato la composizione probabilmente piu’ famosa e significativa di Pepper ,dal titolo evocativo Witchi tai to. Musicista vicino alla concezione world di Don Cherry e Nana Vasconcelos, purtroppo scomparso prematuramente nel 1992 a soli 51 anni. Quel sapore tutto particolare delle melodie pellerossa, miscelate con il jazz, spazi aperti, armonie senza barriere, il vero significato del termine world music, svincolato dai significati puramente commerciali acquisiti negli ultimi anni.

L’effetto e’ questo, fermare il tempo, calmare il momento e respirare il silenzio e l’armonia infranta delle sfere celesti. L’ordine delle cose nel basso di questa composizione , quello che e’ bello sembra semplice anche all’occhio, la complessita’ e’ nascosta nelle pieghe profonde della composizione. Newton contemporaneo di Purcell diceva : "La verita’ si ritrova sempre nella semplicità, mai nella confusione. " E vorrei regalarvi le suggestioni di questa composizione e la bellezza vera ed autentica nascosta nella semplicita’ disarmante di questa composizione di Purcell.
